How to Make Langstroth Beehive Frames: A Step-by-Step Guide

Langstroth beehive frames are an important component of beekeeping, and they provides a place for bees to build their comb and store honey. In this article, we will guide you to make Langstroth beehive frames using simple tools and techniques. Whether you are a seasoned beekeeper or a DIY enthusiast, follow these steps to create sturdy frames for your beehives.

How to make langstroth bee frames

Step 1: Prepare Your Working Area

Before you begin making Langstroth beehive frames, ensure that you have a suitable working area. Clear a space and gather all the necessary tools and materials within reach. This will save you time and make the process more efficient.

Step 2: Cut the Wood

Using a saw, cut the wood into appropriate sizes for the different parts of the beehive frames. To facilitate assembly, group the pieces of wood according to their functions. Remember that the top bars should be longer than the bottom bars by 10 mm, allowing for a 5 mm projection on each end that will sit on the rebates of your beehive boxes.

It is advisable to work on bee frames of one depth at a time to avoid mistakes and minimize the wastage of wood. The sidebars, which determine the depth of the frames, should be cut to specific lengths: 230 mm for deep frames, 160 mm for medium frames, and 134 mm for shallow frames. The bottom bars should have a length of 470 mm, while the top bars should measure 480 mm.

Step 3: Add Holes into the Sidebars

If you intend to wire your frames, consider adding holes to the sidebars. These holes will provide anchor points for the wires, ensuring that the comb remains secure within the frames.

Step 4: Add Grooves

Create grooves in the top and bottom bars to securely hold the foundation. However, if you choose not to use foundation, you can leave the wood without a groove. To help the bees in gripping the frames when constructing a comb, it is recommended to cut a line into the wood.

Step 5: Add Notches

Prepare notches on the sidebars that will hold the top and bottom bars. These notches should match the thickness of the wood being used. Additionally, taper the sidebars early on to avoid the need for further adjustments after assembly.

Step 6: Glue the Pieces Together

Now it’s time to assemble the beehive frames. Carefully insert a top bar into the groove, ensuring a tight fit. The wedge cleat groove on the top bar should be on the inside. Repeat this process with the second side bar and the remaining top bar.

Next, flip the partially assembled frame upside down and apply glue to the grooves on the bottom side. Insert a bottom bar into the grooves on the side bars, making sure it fits snugly.

By following these steps, you can create Langstroth beehive frames that are sturdy, functional, and suitable for your specific beekeeping needs. With practice, you will become proficient in making frames of different depths and sizes.
